The two books of the Kings cover the many kings - good and bad, wise and not so- who governed Israel after the period of consolidation under David. As the Book opens we hear that David is old, so old he cannot keep himself warm anymore(my dear Mom has that trouble). One of his sons is trying to usurp the throne though David is living. David had promised his succesion to Solomon however.
Solomon's reign is noted for expansion each of the twelve tribes/states provide daily for the king's /kingdoms food and needs. Solomon decides it is time to build a temple to the Lord. (See the picture in my Bible) He does but seems to know that as fine as it is it is no match or equal for the greatness of God. No wonder Solomon's reputation is for wisdom. The famous story of the two women fighting over the baby is also found here. That is one of the first Bible stories I remember and it embodies the wisdom of Solomon. Many kings follow Solomon. In the second book we are introduced to Elijah. The reading becomes more obtuse and instead of history we feel the shift to myth and prophecy in the text. The scene where Elijah rises to the heavens in a chariot and calls upon his father prefigures Christ's resurrection. At the close of Kings 2, the Babylonians circle Jerusalem and the city is about to fall to Nabuchadonosr.
